Highlights

History

Seogwipo has many springs welling up, and beneath it lies a wide layer of tuff that water barely seeps through, so it has an unusually large number of waterfalls. Of them all, Cheonjiyeon Falls is the one that best represents Seogwipo.

The pool below the falls is home to giant mottled eels, which are active mostly at night. Jeju is the northern limit of where giant mottled eels can live, so in 1962 the area became a natural monument, the "Jeju Habitat of Giant Mottled Eels". In 1964 the native habitat of the damparsu tree in the valley was designated a natural monument, and in 1993 the warm-temperate forest followed. All five damparsu trees that stood on the western slope have died, and young trees that appear to be their successors now grow there.

From the entrance, walk through the valley forest along a path paved with basalt, and the falls appear at the end. The path is easy, so it suits everyone from children to older people, and the dense forest keeps it cool even in midsummer. It is open at night too, when the falls look different from how they look by day.
