Common taxi, money-exchange and nightlife scams in tourist areas — and the counter-move for each.

Most scams aimed at tourists in Seoul follow a few patterns. Here are the patterns, how to stop each one, and who to call.

Taxi

If a driver will not run the meter or quotes a “fixed price”, say “미터기 켜주세요” (please turn on the meter) or get out. Booking in an app (k.ride, built for visitors, or Kakao T) records the route and fare.
At the airport, use only the official taxi stands. Ignore anyone inside the terminal who offers you a ride.

Money exchange

Change money only at banks or money changers registered with Korea Customs Service, or use an ATM. Skip street and back-alley offers of a “better rate”. Count the cash at the window and keep the exchange receipt.

Nightlife

Do not follow street touts, or friendly strangers who insist on one particular bar. Ask for prices before you order, and check the bill against them before you pay.
