HiKorea’s official text rarely covers the real edge cases: a gap between visas, switching from study to job-seeking, or a dependent who arrives late.
This playbook gives the document set, the office, and the sequence for the five situations that most often go wrong.
ℹ️ Information is accurate as of the date shown and can change. Confirm critical steps with official sources before acting.
0. The two rules that save you
- Book the 출입국 (immigration office) reservation on hikorea.go.kr EARLY — slots in Seoul vanish weeks out. Apply for extension BEFORE your current status expires (you can usually apply up to ~4 months ahead).
- Overstaying even by accident triggers fines and a possible re-entry ban — never let the date pass while “waiting for a slot.” Walk in if you must.
1. Study (D-2) → Job-seeking (D-10)
- Eligible after graduation (or near it). Core docs: diploma/expected-graduation cert, 점수제 (points) evidence (degree, TOPIK, age), an activity plan, proof of funds, residence proof.
- D-10 is points-based — bring everything that adds points; borderline applicants get rejected for thin job-search plans.
2. Gap / late dependent / status mismatch
- Dependent (F-3) arriving after the primary: the primary’s status + relationship docs (apostilled marriage/birth cert) are the gate — get them apostilled in your home country BEFORE travel; doing it later from Korea is slow.
- If you changed jobs on E-7, report within 15 days (이직신고) — missing this complicates the next extension.
3. If you’ve already overstayed
- Report voluntarily (자진신고) — voluntary departure usually means a lower fine and a shorter ban than being caught. Do NOT just leave silently if you intend to return.
- There are periodic amnesty/relief programs — check the latest immigration notice before deciding; terms change.
