VAT tax refund

Korea charges 10% VAT and refunds it to most short-term visitors. Two paths: immediate at the till, or with receipts redeemed at the airport.

Immediate refund — at the store

At affiliated stores (Global Tax Free, KT-Pass, etc.), VAT is deducted at checkout when you show your passport. Capped per receipt and per stay.

  • • Show your passport at checkout.
  • • Caps: ₩1,000,000/receipt · ₩5,000,000/stay.
  • • You see the VAT removed from the total — no follow-up.

Post refund — at the airport

Keep your receipts. At Incheon the process is kiosk-first: scan your passport and receipts at a tax-refund kiosk, go to the Customs desk only if it flags you for inspection, then collect cash or a card refund at the kiosk in the departure area.

  • • Scan at a refund kiosk before check-in — if it flags you, show the goods at the Customs desk first.
  • • Then drop receipts at the airport refund kiosk for cash, card credit, or Alipay/WeChat.
  • • Allow 30 extra minutes at the airport.

Eligibility & airport desks

  • • Visitor on a short-term visa (B-1, B-2, C-3) — stay under 6 months.
  • • Items must leave Korea unused, within 3 months of purchase.
  • • Show passport at purchase OR at the refund counter.
  • • Some categories excluded: services, food/drink consumed, used cosmetics.
  • Incheon T1 — Duty-free area, 3F, near gate 28 (07:00–22:00). Kiosks: Duty-free area 3F near gate 28; Concourse 3F beside the central pharmacy — 24h.
  • Incheon T2 — Duty-free area, 3F, opposite gate 250 and near gate 253 (07:00–21:30). Kiosks: Duty-free area 3F: opposite gate 248, near gate 250, opposite gate 253 — 24h.
  • Gimpo — Departure level customs. Kiosks: International departures hall.
  • Jeju — International departures. Kiosks: Departure hall.
  • Gimhae (Busan) — International terminal. Kiosks: Departure hall.
