Seoul subway — elevator access

Almost every Seoul station has at least one accessible route, but it's often only ONE exit. Plan your exit before you go down.
What works
- + Naver Map / Kakao Map both display the elevator icon on station maps.
- + Seoul Metro has a free wheelchair-assist service — wave at the platform booth or call 1577-1234 in advance.
- + Major stations (Seoul Station, Hongdae, Gangnam, Jamsil, COEX, Itaewon) are step-free from one exit.
Watch-outs
- − Older Line 1, 2, 4 stations may have a stair lift instead of an elevator — slow and sometimes broken.
- − Transfer between Line 2 and Line 5 at DDP can require backtracking — allow 15 min.
- − Some exits "have an elevator" that only reaches the mezzanine, not the platform — verify with the staff booth.
Wheelchair-accessible taxis

Standard Korean taxis are sedans — wheelchairs go in the trunk, you transfer to the seat. For non-folding wheelchairs, use the dedicated service.
What works
- + Seoul Danurim (seouldanurim.net) — the city tourism organisation lends wheelchair-lift minivans and a lift bus with driver, fuel and parking free of charge. Foreign visitors count as eligible; register on the site, then book your dates.
- + For a folding wheelchair, an ordinary Kakao T or street taxi works — the chair goes in the trunk. There is still no dependable in-app "wheelchair taxi" call (Kakao ran only a pilot), so don't plan around one.
- + The city 장애인콜택시 (1588-4388) is far cheaper but residents-only: registering needs a Korean disability card (복지카드) plus a 장애정도결정서, so most visitors cannot use it.
Watch-outs
- − Same-day calls during rush hour often fail — book ahead.
- − No cross-border service to Incheon Airport via the cheap option — use a private airport van.
Palaces & traditional sites

The royal palaces have ramps to the main halls. Hanok villages and traditional markets do not.
What works
- + Gyeongbokgung: ramp at Gwanghwamun & Heungnyemun gates; National Folk Museum is fully step-free.
- + Changdeokgung: ramps through the main court; the Secret Garden has gravel paths but is mostly flat.
- + War Memorial of Korea, National Museum of Korea, MMCA — all best-in-class step-free.
Watch-outs
- − Bukchon, Insadong, Jeonju Hanok Village have stone-block alleys with frequent steps.
- − Many old temple complexes (Bulguksa, Beomeosa) have stairs without ramps to the main hall.
Restaurants & cafes

Chain restaurants in office districts are mostly step-free. Beloved traditional spots are typically NOT.
What works
- + Department-store and mall food courts: always step-free, big enough for wheelchairs.
- + Modern chains like Mapo Mandu, Bukchang-dong Sundubu, Outback, Vips, Ashley.
- + New cafes (Starbucks Reserve, Anthracite, %Arabica) are accessible.
Watch-outs
- − Floor-seating restaurants (전통 한정식, 보쌈집) often have a step up + shoes-off.
- − Old gukbap / bunsik spots have narrow doors and 50-year-old plumbing.
Subway tactile guidance & audio

All Seoul subway stations have tactile yellow guidance strips from elevators to platforms; platforms have edge-warning bumps.
What works
- + Audio announcements in Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese for every station.
- + Braille on handrails at major transfer points.
- + "Visit Seoul" app has audio descriptions for top attractions.
Watch-outs
- − Streets outside the station — tactile sidewalk paths exist but are often blocked by parked motorbikes or signs.
Hearing-impaired travelers

Korea has solid visual signage but limited captioning at events.
What works
- + Subway visual displays on every car — current station, next station, transfers, exit numbers.
- + Major museums (National Museum, MMCA) have video guides with closed captions.
- + Hospital staff at international centers (Severance, Samsung Medical, Asan) can call interpretation video relay.
Watch-outs
- − K-Pop concerts and Korean musicals usually have no captions in any language.
- − Movie tickets — confirm "자막" (subtitled) screening for foreign films; Korean films rarely have English subs in theatres.
Senior travelers
🧓 Senior traveler
Korean culture defers to elderly visitors — but the pace can be high and the squat toilets surprise people.
What works
- + Subway: priority seats (dark blue + pink) are reliably vacated when you board.
- + Restaurants: staff will offer chairs even at floor-seating tables if asked ("의자 부탁드려요").
- + Discounts: the 65+ free subway ride is a residents' benefit — the 우대용 교통카드 goes to 65+ Koreans and to registered permanent residents / overseas-Korean nationals. Short-term visitors are not automatically entitled, so ask at the station office instead of assuming.
- + KTX has dedicated quiet cars; reserve aisle seats for easier walking.
Watch-outs
- − Some palace tours include 2–3 km of walking with stairs — book the Secret Garden golf-cart-assist tour.
- − Summer humidity (Jul–Aug) is rough — hydrate aggressively and rest in cooled subway stations.
Stroller rental & storage
👶 Stroller / pram
Many big destinations rent strollers free or cheap.
What works
- + Free stroller rental at all 4 royal palaces (passport at the gate).
- + Lotte World, Everland, Coex Aquarium — paid rental ₩5–10k.
- + Most department stores rent strollers from the customer-service desk on B1 (free w/ ID).
Watch-outs
- − Stroller in a packed subway car at rush hour is hard — aim for off-peak.
- − No-stroller zones in some retail aisles in Myeong-dong — check signage.
Nursing & diaper-change rooms

Korea standardized "수유실 (nursing room)" in major retail and stations.
What works
- + All AREX express stations, Seoul Station, COEX, Lotte World Mall, Starfield Hanam, IFC Mall have nursing rooms.
- + Department stores: B1 customer service desk knows the location.
- + To find a nursing room anywhere in Korea, search 수유정보 알리미 (sooyusil.com) — a government-backed map directory of ~3,000 registered nursing facilities. Rooms marked 가족수유실 admit fathers too.
