Will my foreign Visa/Mastercard just work everywhere?
At chains, hotels, and big retail — yes. At street stalls, traditional markets, and on Korean checkout pages — frequently no. That gap is the whole reason to carry cash + a prepaid card.
Korea looks cashless until your foreign card gets silently declined at a street stall — or a Korean website walls your checkout behind identity verification. This shows exactly where each payment method works across real situations, and the simple combo that fixes it.
Curated 2026-01 from visitor reports + KTO and payment-provider guidance. Two things are reforming and noted inline: open-loop contactless transit (still expanding) and foreign on-ramps for Naver/Kakao Pay (not yet reliable for tourists).
The single most useful thing in your wallet. Accepted at virtually every chain and mid-size merchant — but small/cash-only spots and Korean websites are where it breaks down.
| Convenience stores | Works |
| Cafe & fast-food chains | Works |
| Sit-down restaurants Tiny family restaurants may be cash-only; chains and anything with a table-side kiosk take cards. | Usually works |
| Street food & markets Stalls and pojangmacha are cash-only. ATMs with the PLUS/Cirrus logo dispense KRW from a foreign card. | Rarely |
| Department stores & big marts | Works |
| Taxis | Usually works |
| Subway & bus (tap to ride) Open-loop contactless (tap Visa/MC on the gate) is live on parts of Seoul Metro & some buses since 2024 but not network-wide — carry a T-money card as backup. | Hit or miss |
| Vending & unmanned kiosks | Hit or miss |
| Korean online stores & ticketing Many Korean sites require 본인인증 (identity verification via a Korean phone) before a foreign card is even accepted. This is the #1 online wall. | Rarely |
| Hotels & guesthouses | Works |
| Hospitals & pharmacies | Usually works |
Carry these four and you’re covered for essentially every situation in Korea:
Withdraw won from a Global ATM (PLUS / Cirrus / UnionPay logos). Heading to the airport now? The arrival pack sets you up Day-0.

Many Korean sites gate checkout behind identity verification (본인인증) linked to a Korean mobile number before they accept any card. Without a Korean phone you often can’t pass it — a prepaid domestic card helps but doesn’t always clear it.
Usually not as a tourist — they require a Korean bank account and phone number to register. Foreign on-ramps are rolling out but aren’t reliable yet. Don’t plan around them.
Sometimes — open-loop contactless is expanding across Seoul since 2024 but isn’t network-wide. A T-money card always works; tapping a Visa/MC is still hit-or-miss.
