History
The old name of Gamcheon (甘川) was Gamnae (甘內). "Gam" comes from "geom", an old word meaning a god, and "nae" from a word meaning a stream. Refugees settled here during the Korean War, and the village took its present shape when a Taegeukdo religious community was built in the 1950s. Houses were set like steps along the slopes of Cheonmasan Mountain so that no house blocks the sunlight or view of the one behind it.
In 2009, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's "Village Art Project" brought students, artists and residents together to decorate the alleys. The village went on to become one of Busan's best-known sights, and in August 2026 Saha-gu designated it a Special Management Area to protect residents' daily lives.
People still live here, and craft workshops and souvenir shops sit between the alleys. Follow the stamp map sold at the information center through the alleys and you will have looped the whole village.

Tips
- From Toseong Station exit 6 or Jagalchi Station exit 1 on Line 1, transfer to village bus Seo-gu 2, Seo-gu 2-2 or Saha-gu 1-1.
- Village parking is limited, so the official guide also recommends public transport.
- The information center (051-204-1444) sells the alley tour map, keeps luggage and can introduce you to a village guide.
- Groups of 10 or more must buy the official map (from August 1, 2026). These are people's homes, so walk quietly and do not fly drones or take photos into houses.
