Highlights

History

Once called Solgol or Songsan because of its many pine trees, this place became Songwol-dong (松月洞) because the moon seen through the pine forest was so charming. After Incheon Port opened in 1883, foreigners including Germans lived here, and it became a wealthy neighborhood.

Over time, young people moved away and empty houses were left behind. To improve living conditions, flower paths were laid out in 2013 and the village was painted on a fairy-tale theme, giving it the look it has today.

Buildings all over the village look as if they have just leapt out of a fairy tale. Utility poles have turned into the giant beanstalk from "Jack and the Beanstalk", and gas meters into the Tin Woodman from "The Wizard of Oz".

Go further into the village and you reach a mural lane decorated with familiar Korean folk tales. Take a photo in front of the huge paintings and you feel like a character in the story.
