Highlights

History

Jeonju is regarded as the birthplace of the Joseon dynasty. The hanok village around Pungnam-dong began to take shape around 1910. Even in the early 20th century, when modern buildings were going up, residents kept living in hanok. Thanks to that, more than 700 hanok still stand in the middle of the city.

In 1977 the Gyo-dong and Pungnam-dong area was designated a Hanok Preservation District. In 1987 it was made a scenic district, so buildings taller than 2 stories could no longer be built. Since 2002, a city ordinance has helped pay for repairing hanok. It was designated an International Slow City in 2010 and re-designated in 2016.

Today the village covers 298,260㎡ around Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong, with 947 buildings, 735 of them hanok. 575 businesses operate here, including 203 places to stay and 183 places to eat and drink. Hanbok and tea ceremony experiences, traditional craft workshops, and small museums and galleries are found all over the village.
