자만벽화마을

Why go

Jaman Mural Village is a neighborhood on the hill behind Jeonju Hanok Village. People made their homes here after the war, and residents and artists painted murals together on every wall.

Highlights

History

Jaman Village is a neighborhood of houses packed tightly below the ridge of Seungamsan Mountain. It was a hillside shantytown that grew up as refugees settled here one by one during the Korean War, a small village of tangled narrow alleys. It became widely known in 2012, when pictures were painted on the walls of about 40 houses as part of a green trail project.

Along every alley and wall, paintings in many styles follow one another on the themes of flowers, fairy tales and landscapes. The murals are popular photo spots, and many of the houses have now become cafes, guesthouses and restaurants. At dusk, many people stroll slowly through the alleys under the sunset. By day the colors of the murals, and by night the lights of the alleys, give the village a different face.

Tips

  • It is just across the road from Jeonju Hanok Village. Omokdae and Imokdae are nearby, so it also makes a good course for seeing cultural heritage sites together.
  • The culture and tourism guides' King Taejo Yi Seong-gye Road Tour leaves daily at 14:00 and passes Omokdae, Jaman Mural Village and Imokdae; it takes 1 hour. During heat waves the course changes, so check with a tourist information center in advance.
  • There is no parking lot in the village, and you can visit all year round with no closing days. For questions, contact Jeonju tourist information (063-282-1330).
