Logistics — the surprises

The practical gaps between what Western parents expect and how Korea actually works.

  1. 1

Taxi car seats — bring your own

Korea's Road Traffic Act requires a child seat for children under 6 in any car, but a taxi driver is not at fault if a passenger won't use one — and you should not expect a taxi or Kakao T car to have one. Bring a travel seat, use the subway, or book a transfer that explicitly provides seats (Seoul Danurim fits one for children 48 months and older).

  2. 2

    Find 수유실 (nursing/diaper rooms)

Many department stores, large malls and big stations have a free 수유실. Search sooyusil.com (수유정보 알리미, run by the Korea Population, Health and Welfare Association) — a map of about 3,000 registered rooms — or ask staff "수유실 어디예요?".

  3. 3

    Subway with a stroller

Children under 6 ride the Seoul subway free with a paying guardian (up to three per adult; a fourth pays the child fare); ages 6–12 pay the child fare, from ₩550. Elevators are often at only one or two exits — ask staff. Avoid the morning and evening rush.

  4. 4

    High chairs: ask, don't assume

Many restaurants have a high chair (아기 의자) but won't offer it — ask "아기 의자 있어요?". Casual and BBQ places are generally kid-welcoming.

  5. 5

    Baby supplies on the go

Convenience stores often carry diapers (기저귀) and wipes; supermarkets and pharmacies have fuller ranges, including formula. Bring enough of your usual formula for the first days.

  6. 6

    Child discounts — rules differ

Age rules vary by venue: palaces are free for foreign visitors 18 and under; Legoland Korea is free under 36 months; Gyeonggi Children's Museum is free under 12 months; the subway is free under 6. Carry passports to prove age.

Practical tips

  • Rainy-day backup listKorea's summer monsoon and winter cold make indoor backups essential. Keep SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium, Lotte World's indoor section and a children's museum on standby.
  • Compare official-site prices firstTheme-park gate prices are often higher than online prices — Legoland Korea lists adult tickets from ₩66,000 at the gate and from ₩47,000 online. Check the official site before buying elsewhere. See /pay for payment basics.
  • Theme-park height limitsRide access is by height, not age. Measure your toddler before you queue to avoid tears at the front.
  • Pack for the subway, not the cabBecause you should not count on a taxi child seat, plan most days around the subway (free for under-6s) + walking. A light, foldable stroller beats a bulky travel system here.
  • Convenience stores = your pit stopThey have snacks, drinks and basic baby supplies, and many have a hot-water dispenser. Build them into your route as rest stops.
  • Pre-book children's museumsThe National Museum of Korea's Children's Museum is free but works by online reservation; Gyeonggi Children's Museum sells most tickets online in two daily sessions. Book before you travel.
  • Korean kids' food is mildAsk for "안 맵게" (not spicy). Easy wins: gimbap, mandu, fried chicken, tonkatsu (돈까스), bibimbap (mix without gochujang), and any noodle soup.
  • If a child gets sickPediatric clinics (소아과) and pharmacies (약국) are common. In an emergency call 119 — an interpreter can join the call. Carry your child's basic meds just in case.
