Good for: Foreigner-friendliest. Runs through UT LLC, the Uber + Tmap Mobility joint venture launched Apr 2021 (Uber bought out Tmap's stake in Dec 2024). 100% English in-app.
Watch out: Smaller driver pool. Surge pricing more aggressive than Kakao. Not available in all neighborhoods.

Typical fare: ₩14,000–28,000

For tourists, often the easiest. Use as Kakao T backup or if Kakao SMS fails.

Street taxi + cash-on-arrival

Good for: Zero app setup. Universal acceptance. Use /address-card to give the driver a Korean address.

Typical fare: ₩12,000–25,000

Fallback when apps fail. Combine with /address-card for the driver.

Kakao T (English mode)

Settings → Language → English. Sign up needs an SMS-verifiable phone number; once registered, foreign cards work in-app OR you can default to cash-on-arrival.
Good for: Dominant market share (90%+ Seoul taxi). Live ETA, route preview, English driver-bot.
Watch out: Initial SMS verification needs a Korean phone or an eSIM with KR-number plan. Tour-bundle eSIMs from Klook now sometimes include a temporary KR number.

Typical fare: ₩12,000–22,000

The default. If you can pass SMS verification (via KR-number eSIM or hotel-WiFi-Wise account workaround), Kakao T = best experience.

UT / 우버 택시 (same operator as Uber)

Good for: 2nd largest Korean ride-hail. Cheaper than Kakao at off-peak. Premium "Uber Black" sedan tier.
Watch out: Not an independent alternative to Uber: 우티 was renamed 우버 택시 in Feb 2024 and the old UT app auto-updated into the Uber app, so this is the same fleet — if Uber worked for you, this row adds nothing. (It is unrelated to TADA/타다, a separate Socar service.) Less driver coverage than Kakao.

Typical fare: ₩11,000–20,000

Listed separately because Korean signage and older guides still say "UT" — if you already installed Uber above, you are on it.

4 workarounds for the SMS wall

eSIM with included Korean phone number

✓ High reliability
  1. 1On Klook / KKday: search "Korea eSIM with phone number" (different from data-only eSIMs).
  2. 2Pick a plan with 통화/SMS included (~$30–50 for 7-day).
  3. 3Activate the eSIM on your phone before arrival.
  4. 4Use the Korean number when prompted for SMS verification at Kakao T / UT signup.
  5. 5Verification completes within 60 seconds.

Cost: $30–50 USD for 7-day plan

Caveats: Some "Korea SIM with KR number" plans are physically SIM only (not eSIM). Verify before booking.

Skip Kakao T entirely — use Uber

Cash-mode survival tips

  • ATM withdrawal firstWithdraw ₩100,000 from a BC Global / Shinhan / Woori ATM on arrival. Cash-on-arrival for taxis = no app required.
  • Confirm meterSay "미터기 켜주세요 (mi-teo-gi kyeo-ju-se-yo) — Please use the meter." See /scams for the meter-off taxi pattern.
  • Generate address-card firstUse /address-card to make a Korean address screen BEFORE getting in the taxi. Show driver instead of pronouncing.
  • Late-night surchargeAfter 23:00, fare increases 40%. Some drivers add this to the meter; some quote flat. Always confirm before getting in.
  • Receipt = case numberAlways take the receipt. Includes driver ID + license plate. Required for any 1330 complaint.
  • WOWPASS T-money fallbackFor non-app rides, WOWPASS doubles as T-money for taxi (in-taxi terminal accepts T-money). No phone needed.
